First and Second Grades
First- and second-graders continue to develop cooperation skills and their natural, joyful willingness to learn.
- Primary Class is capped at 18 students.
- Support teachers are in place for small-group learning.
- Lessons are taught with an understanding that children have multiple learning styles.
- Whole-group, small-group, and individual sessions build confidence as Primary Class children learn how to be focused, independent students.
- Primary Class students experience daily Math and Reading blocks, and integrated study of Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts lessons several times each week.
- Students enjoy seven special classes weekly: Spanish, Phys. Ed., Art, Integrated Technology, Life Skills, Music, and Library.
- Units and benchmarks for Primary Class — which are covered over a two-year cycle — meet or exceed the Michigan and national content and learning standards.
- Daily homework of Reading and individualized skill practice is expected of a Primary Class student.
A strong academic foundation is strengthened through Reading, Spelling, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies, integrated with character education. Primary Class students are taught to think, understand, and act by building on their individual abilities. Leadership opportunities arise as experienced Primary Class students welcome newly graduated Kindergarteners, participate in Spirit Council, and set a good example.
