Third and Fourth Grades
Third- and fourth-graders learn to embrace responsibility for their education, learning in an environment that offers cooperative learning opportunities, serious working periods, and adventurous read-aloud stories.
Middle Class is capped at 18 students.
Support teachers are in place for small-group learning.
Lessons are taught with an understanding that children have multiple learning styles, including the use of an electronic interactive whiteboard.
Whole-group, small-group, and individual sessions build confidence, enable focus, and encourage independence.
Middle Class students experience daily Math and Reading blocks, with integrated study of Science, Social Studies, and Writer’s Workshop lessons several times each week.
Students enjoy seven special classes weekly: Spanish, Phys. Ed., Art, Integrated Technology, Life Skills, Music, and Library.
Units and benchmarks for Middle Class — which are covered over a two-year cycle — meet or exceed the Michigan and national content and learning standards.
Daily homework of Reading, math-mastery work, and work for other academic subjects is expected of a Middle Class student – 30 to 40 minutes each day.
In Middle Class, students learn time-management and study skills, and homework is part of the daily routine. Students are guided through independent projects and are encouraged to take ownership of their work. Leadership opportunities arise with student partnerships, a special recognition week for each student, increased public speaking, and Spirit Council.
