2010 Character Conference
Growing Up in Today's Crazy World:
Strategies for Dealing with Crushes, Frenemies,
Gossip, and Bullying
MetroParent Magazine's "Character and Kindness Workshop"
sponsored by Japhet School as its 7th Annual Character Conference
When: Tuesday, November 30, 2010, 8:45 AM to 4:30 PM

As keynote speaker, Wiseman guides attendees through the transformations
in the adolescent landscape over the past several years. Learn
concrete strategies
for helping children navigate conflict ethically
and with social competence. Parents,
educators and the general
public will have the unique opportunity to hear from
several local
experts on a wide range of topics relating to raising children in a
culture of dignity. The morning's event begins with a three-hour
workshop by
Wiseman. After lunch, attendees will have their choice of
eight classes held in
two breakout sessions. Local representatives from
educational institutions,
non-profit agencies and support services will
be there to talk about their programs
and the help they can provide.
Workshops presented by Japhet School speakers:
Weaving Character Eduction into an
Academic Curriculum:
Strategies for building
character in your classroom
Discover what true character
education is and how it can benefit an entire school
population -- students,
teachers, and parents. The teaching of character is pro-active
discipline to
help diffuse bullying before it arises. Effective character education is
integrated with academics and homeroom activities, not an add-on. Participants
will
receive character-based, practical ideas that can be put to use immediately
in the classroom.
Education of the Whole Child:
Supporting social, emotional, and cognitive
achievement in the classroom
Learn how cutting edge findings from the study
of positive youth development can be
incorporated into the classroom.
Positive youth development puts an emphasis on
developing each child’s
strengths and supporting achievement in social, emotional
and cognitive aspects
of the child’s life. From this perspective children are full of
potential
to be developed, not problems to be managed. This
approach recognizes that academic
achievement goes beyond standardized test
scores. By creating positive school and family
partnerships, each child can
become a competent, confident, and engaged member of his
or her community.
Participants will learn how to translate these new findings into
classroom
strategies for supporting child achievement and creating successful
family-school alliances.
