Japhet Admissions Procedures

Japhet School enrolls students with a wide range of intellectual experience. Japhet provides opportunities for students to express academic success based on the belief that all students possess talents and gifts. Acceptance of children into Japhet is done with great care because with enrollment comes a sincere effort to provide individualized academic support, thus encouraging students to strive for their personal best.

CONTACT: Prior to making application to Japhet School, families need to interview with our Admissions Director, Robin Pospisil, and meet the Head of School. Appointments can be made by calling Robin at 248-585-9150, or e-mailing robin.pospisil@japhetschool.org.

VISIT: We request that prospective grade-level students -- those applying for first through eighth grades -- visit the classroom in which they would enroll for two full school days. This visit allows the students to explore the classroom, curriculum, and the school culture and community. It also allows teachers to assess the academic and social strengths of each student to aid in determining the fit between school and student. Many friendships bud during these visits and it is not unusual for current and prospective students alike to want the visit to become a full-time arrangement.

Prospective students in the Preschool and Kindergarten programs are asked to visit for a morning with their parent(s). At this age, the benefits of such a visit include comfort for the child as his or her parent is nearby, and the opportunity to see that parents are enjoying the room, the teachers, and other students. This visit also provides parents with a look into the day and the assurance that their child will be taught in a nurturing environment. Lastly, teachers are afforded some insight into the type of relationship shared by the parents and child, which can provide helpful clues and strategies to use on a daily basis.

These visits can be scheduled at the time of your tour and interview, or by phone with Robin Pospisil.

Information about deposits, tuition payments, multiple child tuition discounts, payment plans, additional fees, and tuition assistance:

NOTE: The following information is date-specific. However, we do enroll children mid-year and throughout summer, and we can create a tuition payment plan that reflects the actual date of enrollment.

Application Fee: A non-refundable fee of $25 must accompany each application. This fee is not applied toward tuition.

Deposit: Upon acceptance to Japhet School, parents can reserve a place for their child with a deposit of $575 per child. If the school, for any reason, is unable to enroll a student after the application has been approved, the $575 deposit will be refunded with a written notification. If a student, enrolling for an upcoming school year, withdraws the application before June 1, 2012, the $575 deposit is refundable; if the student withdraws the application after June 1, 2012, the deposit is non-refundable.

Tuition Payments may be made in one of three ways:

-- Single-Payment Plan: Advanced payment made in full by August 15.

-- Two-Payment Plan: First payment due by August 15, with final payment made on January 15.

-- Ten-Payment Plan: Coordinated through the business office with first payment due August 15. The Ten-Payment Plan requires a $250 bookkeeping fee per child.

Payments may be in cash, money order, check, or credit card. A late fee of 1.5% per month (18% per annum) will be charged on balances that are not current. There is a $40 fee for all returned checks. Accounts with extenuating circumstances will be handled on an individual basis with the Head of School.

Discounts:

Two students per family . . . . . . . . . . . . .5% on second tuition (K-8th)

Three or more students per family . . . . . . . 10% on third and more tuitions (K-8th)

Material Fee: Covers annual consumable supplies, supplies for some special projects, required novels, some student assemblies, and the use of required textbooks. Textbooks must be returned in reasonable condition at the end of the school year.

Before/After School Care and Milk Fees: Hourly rates are based on a full hour. Japhet charges in quarter-hour (15-minute) increments for any fraction thereof. Fees such as milk, After-School Care, etc. will be billed separately.

Make-Up Days and Drop-in Fees: Holidays, teacher conference days, half days, or special host days sometimes alter the usual schedule. This occurs across all grade levels and is considered normal. For this reason, no special arrangements for make-up days or switch-days are provided in the Preschool or Kindergarten. Drop-in days requested 48 hours in advance will be considered individually, based on teacher approval. Drop-in fee is $55 per full day and $40 per half day.

Invoices: Initial invoices will be mailed in August. Invoices for additional fees such as milk and latchkey are mailed monthly. A fee of $40 will be charged for returned checks.

Tuition Assistance -- Financial Aid and Scholarship: Limited tuition assistance is available for Kindergarten through 8th grade. Request a Tuition Assistance Packet from the Admissions. Several merit scholarships also are available.

Japhet School admits students without regard to race, color, religion, national or ethnic origin, or other legally protected status, and treats them in all respects without discrimination. Indeed, the School affirmatively seeks and welcomes such diversity in order to enhance students' educational experience. Similarly, the School seeks to achieve diversity among its employees insofar as consistent with the policies and values which have contributed to the School's award-winning program of character education.
